When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1990, Cuba's economy went into a tailspin. With imports of oil cut by more than half – and food by 80 percent – people were desperate. This film tells of the hardships and struggles as well as the community and creativity of the Cuban people during this difficult time. Cubans share how they transitioned from a highly mechanized, industrial agricultural system to one using organic methods of farming and local, urban gardens. It is an unusual look into the Cuban culture during this economic crisis, which they call "The Special Period." The film opens with a short history of Peak Oil, a term for the time in our history when world oil production will reach its all-time peak and begin to decline forever. Cuba, the only country that has faced such a crisis – the massive reduction of fossil fuels – is an example of options and hope.
The Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil is a project of the Arthur Morgan Institute for Community Solutions, a non-profit organization that designs and teaches low-energy solutions to the current unsustainable, fossil fuel based, industrialized, and centralized way of living. Happy Seedlings - Plántulas contentas
4 more boxes started to sprout. Soon we'll be transplanting salads...
We made 2 more large piles of soil, again using river silt (Tierra Lama), river sand and compost from the gigantic compost pile behind Alianza Jaguar.
While working we tasted grapefruits from different trees, and choose a delicious one for its seeds.
Tomorrow Sunday, we'll be planting more Capomo Tree nuts, Papayas, Star Fruits and Grapefruits.

First seedlings have sprouted - Brotes !
This morning, our first seedling came out (lettuces, eggplants)
A large number of participants showed up today and we were blessed by a presentation on Capomo trees by Rosa Orosco from the Maya Nut Institute (see previous post by Alan Fibio)
Mixing more soil to plant the hundreds of Capomo Nuts brought by Rosa

Capomo
Capomo, ramón, ojoche, mojote, breadnut, hari, ox, tlatlacóyic, nazareno, mojú...there must be something in a tree that has so many names.
Around here it's called capomo, botany taxonomists named it Brosimum alicastrum, a plant in the mulberry or fig family (Moraceae).
Rosa's work is very important, and the initiative she supports is gaining momentum around this area. You can check the Maya Nut Institute's website.
I'm sure you'll find lots of interesting information on the web; here's a good link with
info about its culture (in spanish), part of the Tree Seed for Farmers in Central America Manual from OFI/CATIE. Link to the capomo sheet.
I was pleasantly surprised to see the seeds Rosa brought and then putting them into the soil with all. Thanks!

¡Gracias!
Saskatchewan surfers and cat proofing with fish nets - Surfos y Redes
Continuing to seed boxes....
New visitors today, learning how to make boxes.

The 1/2'' of manure that we spread on the bottom of each box has to be fully cured. If too hot, plants will grow too fast and grow with a weak stem.
Some young surfer farmer dudes from Saskatchewan visited us today and got put to getting river silt and sand.

Seeding more boxes - Sembrando más almácigos
6 more boxes of seedlings were started today bringing our total to 10 boxes, with between 500-1000 seeds per box.
Big seeds are more forgiving that small ones as they can be moved around on the soil surface before covering them. Concentration is critical to dropping the seeds correctly so they are spread out evenly in their designated area.
The seed company that you get your seed from is very important. Each wood stick label has the name of the plant, the date of planting, and the seed company name. So if you like a particular variety, you'll know which company the seeds were from.
We planted some Velvet Queen Sunflower, a variety that grows 10' tall with intense red and black colors. We also planted a Walking Stick cabbage, a sweet cabbage variety that grows 10' tall and in maritime climate can over winter, and when deer eat it and arouse it, makes small broccoli-type sprouts.

Since we found some tiny (cat?) paws in some trays, we are building cages to keep rodents and birds out of our boxes. It would be a shame if the many neighborhood stray cats confused our seedling boxes for cat litter boxes! In the near-by recycling center, we found some already made re-bar tent structures, and covered them with fishing net and chicken wire.

Planting more seeds - Sembrando más

Today we continued carefully preparing planting boxes. Having a perfectly flat and smooth soil surface on each box is key to seeding. First you can see how the seeds are spread out and there's no place for any water to puddle.
Today, we seeded several varieties of tobacco and rare flowers which seeds are extremely tiny, requiring the utmost care. Needless to say that you can't sneeze, nor seed during a windy day, while doing that job!

Summer, pushing some large seeds into the ground before box gets sprinkled with finely sifted soil.
Juaquin, in his passionate style, shared stories of mystical flowers (name?) that take three months to germinate, one year to come to flower and then flower during their entire life!
He also told us of some tobacco plants flowers that are aphrodisiacs and which smell is intoxicating.
Planting an aromatic tobacco plants in a row of tomato plants will attract aphids, and the sticky stems of the tobacco plant will trap the aphids
Boxes are slightly tilted towards the sun and the tilt provides perfect drainage, which is key to successful germination.
Because the soil layer over the seeds, especially on these tiny seeds, is so thin, watering with extreme care is critical. A watering implement exist that create a very fine mist. It's called a ross head and is available at any fine gardening store as well as Home Depot.
