Another garden planted. Quillari is walking (and talking)! - Se planta otro jardín. Quillari camina (y habla)!

Yesterday, we started digging the new garden, designed by Jacque and Dave. Alan joined us to create the new beds.

Ayer, comenzamos a excavar el nuevo jardín, diseñado por Jacque y Dave. Alan se unió para crear las nuevas camas.

Martin, a young neighbor, helped with planting basil today. It was good for me to learn how to work with kids who are interested in the activities in the garden.

Martín, un vecino joven, ayudó con el trasplante de albahaca. Fue bueno para mí aprender cómo trabajar con niños que están interesados en actividades del jardín.

We also planted mustard, collard and chard, and two smaller beds, thanks to Alicia, were planted with flowers.

También plantamos mostaza, berza y acelga, así como flores en dos camas menores gracias a Alicia.

The main garden was watered yesterday. It had been 8-9 days and even though the plants looked good, I decided to give it a good 20 minute shower. The next watering will most likely be just before new moon on April 3.

We'll start harvesting basil in the large garden tomorrow. If you want to make pesto, please let me know ahead of time so I can harvest what you need. Sorry, we don't ship outside of Mexico!

It's good to be the new gardener. I get to watch like a farmer watches his/her field, listening for when the plants need attention, whether transplanting, watering or cultivating (see video here), or simply harvesting.

If you come by the garden, there is a board by the transplanting tables. I am writing when an area was last watered, so you can also observe how little water this type of gardening actually uses. It's fascinating for me who has always had a tendency to over-water!

El jardín principal fue regado ayer; habían pasado ya 8-9 días y aunque las plantas se veían bien, decidí darles una buena ducha de 20 minutos. La siguiente irrigación probablemente se haga un poco antes de la luna nueva el 3 de Abril.

Empezaremos a cosechar albahaca en el jardín grande mañana. Si alguien quiere preparar pesto, favor de avisarme con un anticipación para que pueda cosechar lo necesario. Lo sentimos, no enviamos pedidos fuera de México!

Es bueno ser un jardinero nuevo. Me corresponde observar como un agricultor lo hace con su campo, escuchando la necesidad de atención de las plantas, sea trasplantar, irrigar o cultivar (ver video aquí), o simplemente cosechar.

Si pasan por el jardín, hay un tablero en las mesas de trasplante. Estoy apuntando la fecha en que fue irrigada por última vez cada área, para que podamos observar qué poca agua este tipo de jardinería ocupa. Es fascinante para mí que siempre he tenido una tendencia a sobre-irrigar!

Flowers and Possibilities - Flores y Posibilidades

Today was a flower day. Not just in the biodynamic calendar that we use, but for hours, all I did was transplant flowers from their boxes to pots. I admit having felt overwhelmed this morning by the amount of plants that we still have in the nursery-lettuce (500 heads), basil (1,000 plants), tomato (50 plants), as well as hundreds and hundreds of flowers (and by the fact that we have so few volunteers!). Many of the flowers are climbers and need to be transplanted along our fishnet fences, before they choke in their crowded boxes. We need volunteers to plants flowers and we'll be doing that in the morning. In an hour, a lot of plants can be planted.

Please, come help make the garden even more beautiful. I start at 8:00am and I am there until at least 2:00pm or later.

Hoy fue un día de flores. No sólo en el calendario biodinámico que usamos, sino más bien porque estuve trasplantando flores de cajas a macetas por horas. Admito que me sentí abrumado esta mañana debido a la cantidad de plantas que todavía tenemos en el vivero -lechuga (500 cabezas), albahaca (1,000 plantas), jitomate (50 plantas), así como cientos y cuentos de flores (y por el hecho de tener tan pocos voluntarios!). Muchas de las flores son trepadoras y necesitan ser trasplantadas a lo largo de la malla de pesca, antes de que se ahoguen en sus cajas hacinadas. Necesitamos voluntarios para plantar flores y lo estaremos haciendo en la mañana. En una hora, muchas plantas pueden ser plantadas.

Por favor, ayuden a embellecer el jardín aun más. Comienzo a las 8:00 am y estoy ahí tan siquiera hasta las 2:00 pm o más tarde.

We now have 60 pots of mixed flowers. Some will be used to decorate the periphery of the garden, the others are for grabs (a donation is greatly appreciated to support the garden).

Ahora tenemos 60 macetas de flores mixtas. Algunas se usarán para decorar la periferia del jardín, las otras están disponibles para quien quiera (se aprecia una donación para apoyo del jardín).

























Nice to have a visit from Carol today! She started planting some of our flowers in front and inside entreAmigos. There are many more planters inside the building that could host some of the flowers. But...more hands are needed...

Fue grato tener una visita de Carol el día de hoy! Empezó a plantar algunas de nuestras flores enfrente y adentro de entreAmigos. Hay muchas más jardineras dentro del edificio que podrían albergar más flores. Pero...se necesitan más manos...

I envision a garden so beautiful that people will want to visit regularly, just to take a look (and a smell!) and a bag of greens home. I know that's what Juaquin had in heart and set in motion, and the final touch to the garden is up to all of us. We definitely have enough plant and flower material to make it happen!

All we need are some extra hands...

Last week, Victor M. Villalobos, Ph. D., Salvador's Uncle and the director of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture, came by to visit the garden. Juaquin and I had a lovely conversation with him, and he mentioned that he would like his organization to support us.

I don't know about you but I can easily imagine our community garden becoming an educational center for urban agriculture. With the support of an organization like the IICA, our humble garden, created with a few hundred dollars and the passion of just a handful of volunteers, could be expanded into an effective urban agricultural learning center. There is a growing interest in urban farming as it is (as proven by Cuba after the fall of the Soviet Union) the best means to ensure our food sovereignty (not to mention the regeneration of the local ecosystem (as in bees love flowers, birds love fruits and iguanas seem to like our squash plants!)).

Lovely San Pancho, with its vast array of creative and conscious offerings would make a perfect destination for people interested in sustainable community. Don't you think?

I am more and more intrigued (and inspired) by the possibilities that lay in front of us.

What's in front of us right now, besides making the garden even more beautiful, is to be imaginative about how to share the harvest.

• Who will pick, wash and bag lettuce and mixed greens in the morning to have available at the front of entreAmigos?
• Who will order nuts and garlic to make pesto?
• Who has a Cuisinart that we can use?
• Who will coordinate the making and distribution of pesto?

So, if you read this post to the end, and are in San Pancho, please consider visiting the garden to give us a hand.

On Thursday, Jacque and David will be there around 9:00am to continue building the new garden by the entrance of Alianza Jaguar.

Imagino un jardín tan hermoso que la gente querrá visitarlo con regularidad, sólo para asomarse (y oler!) y llevarse una bolsa de ensalada a casa. Yo sé que eso es lo que Juaquín tenía en su corazón y puso en marcha, y el toque final del jardín depende de todos nosotros. Definitivamente tenermos suficiente material de plantas y flores para hacerlo realidad!

Todo lo que necesitamos son algunas manos extras...

La semana pasada, Víctor M. Villalobos, Ph. D., el tío de Salvador y director del Instituto Interamericano de Cooperación para la Agricultura, pasó a visitar el jardín. Juaquín y yo tuvimos una encantadora conversación con él y nos mencionó que le gustaría que su organización nos apoyara.

No sé lo que opinen, pero yo puedo fácilmente imaginar a nuestro jardín comunitario convertirse en un centro educacional de agricultura urbana. Con el apoyo de una organización como IICA, nuestro humilde jardín, creado con unos cuantos cientos de dólares y la pasión de tan sólo una mano de voluntarios, podría expandirse a un efectivo centro de aprendizaje de agricultura urbana. Hay un creciente interés en la agricultura urbana ya que es el mejor medio (como se comprueba con el caso de Cuba después de la caída de la Unión Soviética) para asegurar nuestra soberanía alimentaria; esto sin mencionar la regeneración del ecosistema local (las abejas aman las flores, los pájaros aman las frutas y parece que las iguanas aman nuestros calabacines!).


El encantador San Pancho, con su amplia gama de ofertas creativas y concientes, podría ser el destino perfecto para personas interesadas en una comunidad sustentable. ¿No creen?

Estoy más y más intrigado (e inspirado) por las posibilidades que yacen enfrente de nosotros.

Lo que está enfrente de nosotros ahora, además de hacer aun más hermoso el jardín, es ser creativos sobre cómo compartir la cosecha.

• ¿Quién cosechará, lavará y embolsará lechuga y otros verdes por la mañana para tenerlos disponibles enfrente de entreAmigos?
• ¿Quién ordenará nueces y ajo para hacer pesto?
• ¿Quién nos puede prestar una procesadora de alimentos?
• ¿Quién coordinará la producción y distribución del pesto?

Juaquin is gone, let's eat! - Juaquín se ha ido, ¡a comer!

Juaquin has been trying to leave San Pancho for two days now, but somehow got caught up in too many goodbye parties! He and Barbara are now officially leaving early in the morning. They miraculously managed to not show up at the garden for the past two days, except late in the evening to harvest greens for their dinner.

Juaquín ha estado tratando de salir de San Pancho por dos días, pero de alguna manera u otra se quedó atorado en demasiadas fiestas de despedida! Él y Barbara salen oficialmente temprano esta mañana. Milagrosamente se las arreglaron para no aparecer en los jardines estos últimos días, excepto por las tardes para cosechar algo para su cena.

For the past two months, Juaquin has been showering us with precious information, skills and empowerment. He designed beautiful vegetable and flower gardens and showed us how to abundantly grow vegetables in superbly prepared soil while using a minimum of water.

Durante los dos últimos meses Juaquín nos ha estado empapando con preciosa información, habilidad y empoderamiento. Diseñó jardines de vegetales y flores hermosos y nos enseñó como crecer legumbres en abundancia es suelos magníficamente preparados con un uso mínimo de agua.

The gardens are now thriving and our first lettuce were harvested today, as well as armfuls of greens from thinning the bok choy, turnip and radish beds.

Los jardines están ahora prosperando y nuestras primeras lechugas fueron cosechadas hoy, así como brazados de plantas para ensalada provenientes de las camas de bok choi, nabos y rábanos.

Soon, we’ll start harvesting basil, and a plan is being concocted to create pesto on a daily basis. For those of you who are in San Pancho, we need to find a good source of nuts (pinon, sunflower, walnut…) and garlic. We may be able to use entreAmigos kitchen and will need a large Cuisinart (food processor).

So if you want pesto and have room in your freezer, come talk to us at the garden.

Pronto comenzaremos a cosechar la albahaca, y se está tramando un plan para producir pesto a diario. Para aquellos que se encuentren en San Pancho, necesitamos encontrar una buena fuente de nueces (piñones, girasoles, nuez de nogal...) y ajo. Probablemente podamos usar la cocina de entreAmigos y necesitaremos un procesador de alimentos grande.

Así que si quieren pesto y tienen espacio en su congelador/nevera, vengan a platicar con nosotros al jardín.

We also need to come up with a simple distribution system for our greens. We have 10 varieties of lettuce, chard, bok choy, mustard green, spinach and more. We will most likely bag mixed greens in plastic bags and have them available at the front of entreAmigos.

También necesitamos concebir un sistema de distribución simple para nuestras legumbres. Tenemos 10 variedades de lechuga, acelga, bok choi, mostaza, espinaca y más. Lo más probable es que embolsemos una mezcla de legumbres en bolsitas de plástico para tenerlas disponibles en entreAmigos.

The next couple of days are all about transplanting flowers. They are hitching to get out of their crowded box! Many of them will find their new home in the planters inside entreAmigos, others will go in pots to decorate around the whole garden area, and many will be planted in the new garden (designed by Jacque and Dave from Lo de Marcos) in the front of Alianza Jaguar.

With Juaquin being gone, much is still left to be accomplished, but more importantly, an opportunity is there for us to put in practice all that we’ve been taught.

El siguiente par de días será de trasplante de flores. Se están enganchando entre ellas para poder salir de sus amotonadas cajas! Muchas de ellas encontrarán su nuevo hogar en las jardineras al interior de entreAmigos, otras irán a macetas para decorar alrededor del área de jardín, y muchas serán plantadas en el nuevo jardín (diseñado por Jacque y Dave de Lo de Marcos) enfrente de Alianza Jaguar.

Sin la presencia de Juaquín todavía hay mucho por realizar, pero más importante, hay una oportunidad para nosotros de poner en práctica todo lo que nos ha sido enseñado.

Returning to the Garden - Regresando al Jardín

Coming back to San Pancho and the garden after being gone for a whole week is a treat.

Regresar a San Pancho y al jardín después de haber estado ausento por una semana entera es un placer.

The shrine to the sacred feminine has been planted with flowers and herbs after this weekend's Temascal (Sweat Lodge), with many children lending a hand.

Friday circles and triangles- Círculos y triángulos de viernes

Ayer fue un día hermoso y ocupado. Primero reorganizamos las cajas de trasplante, a pesar de que hemos vaciado más de treinta, todavía quedan más de 80! Fue importante mover las cajas que demostraban un crecimiento deficiente, fuera cual fuera la causa, a un nuevo lugar con más sol y atención.
Yesterday was a beautiful and busy day. First we reorganized the transplanting boxes, and although we've cleared more than thirty, there's still over 80 left! It was important to move the boxes that were showing deficient plant growth, for whatever reason, to a new spot with more sun and attention.



Juaquín nos pasaba las plantas mientras nosotros trasplantábamos a la cama redonda...muchas variedades de lechugas y espinacas. Las camas redondas tienen mucho espacio, más de lo que parece. También colocamos unos cosmos, la mayor parte del tallo bien enterrado; fíjense el tamaño de esa raíz en la foto.

Juaquín handed out the plants while we transplanted them into a round bed...lot of lettuce and spinach varieties. Round beds have lots of space, more than one would think. We also placed some cosmos, most of the stem buried; notice the size of that root on the picture.

La cubrimos con composta y luego le metimos una flores. Aquí se puede apreciar como las zinnias van bien alineadas.
We top dressed it with compost and then got some flowers in. We can see how the zinnias got in line.

Missing the Garden - Extrañando el Jardín

I am traveling to Seattle for a week and miss the garden, coconut ice cream, the sun (it's raining, cold and grey here) and the company of my community of gardeners. Fortunately I have pictures left in my camera to keep my heart connected to all these things that have been part of my every day in San Pancho for many weeks. I'll be back on Tuesday...

Estoy de viaje en Seattle, E.U.A, por una semana y extraño el jardín, el helado de coco, el sol (está lloviendo, frío y gris acá) y la compañía de mi comunidad de jardineros. Afortunadamente tengo fotos guardadas en mi cámara para mantener mi corazón conectado a todas estas cosas que han sido parte del día a día en San Pancho por muchas semanas. Regresaré el martes...
