I am settling in the harvest routine, walking the gardens each morning and picking lettuce, bokchoy, chard, mustard, radish and basil. We now have a table right at the entrance of entreAmigos and about 2/3 of what we harvest sells, the rest being given away after the community center closes.
The heat has been rising and it must be in the middle 80's, but fortunately the citrus and mango canopy around the garden, and the coolness of the vegetable beds, make it quite bearable to work. Even though we are now in the driest season, the garden beds are dripping with dew until mid-morning.
For me, right now is an incredible observation and learning time. Having been involved in this garden project from the beginning, I am able to see the full cycle from seed to harvest, noticing how each variety of plant is doing in this climate, this season and in the beds that we prepared.
The biodynamic French-intensive method (also often called bio-intensive) has been carefully documented in a 9-year study, and has shown to yield 4-8 times more than any commercial technique, while using 1/8 of the water. I am carefully monitoring how each garden is doing after the big watering of the new moon (May 2). Some salads grew twice their size overnight! Five days later, some beds appear dry, and the normal tendency would be to water, but the plants, not the soil, are the ones to watch. In the blazing sun and heat, the basil and lettuce are firm and shiny, showing that the roots are deep and tapping into the moisture below. In the next couple days, I will be cultivating (breaking the ground with a garden fork) instead of watering.

Aunque estamos en la época más seca, las camas del jardín están goteando con rocío hasta la media mañana.
Para mí, ahora es un tiempo increíble de observación y aprendizaje. Compostlan has grown 4 feet since we started, as many mango leaves and kitchen scraps are being offered to the temple daily. I added two new steps to it and have been watering the pile once a week for 2-3 hours. Soon Compostlan will be left to rest and a new pile will be created.

About 25% of the Capomo trees have visibly germinated (although the rest are in the process). Our original nursery is being cleaned up and these trees will soon find homes through Rosa and the Maya Nut Institute.
Harvesting starts at 8:15am. Come give us a hand and get some free greens! As of Monday, we'll be transplanting some climbing flowering vines in pots. They will need to find homes (we've got lots!)
