A group of volunteers from Lo de Marcos has been helping several days a week, as they are themselves ready to start a large compost pile and community garden in their town. Andre' seen here ready for lunch, with salad and wine, sitting on the 20sq' of lawn that we recycled from the dump. Lo de Marcos visitors do it in style!
Un grupo de voluntarios de Lo de Marcos ha estado ayudando varios días a la semana, ya que ellos mismos están listos para empezar una pila grande de composta en el jardín comunitario de su pueblo. Aquí está André listo para el almuerzo, con ensalada y vino, sentado en 20 pies cuadrados de pasto que encontramos en el contenedor de residuos. ¡La gente de Lo de Marcos lo visita con estilo!
The seeds we planted in our new raised beds on March 23 have germinated. Radish, Bok Choy and Turnip are now growing.

Cucumbers got transplanted today, on volcano mounds with horse manure at the center. The newly transplanted plant is lightly watered directly, and thereafter only the center gets watered. A large ant colony lives next to where we planted the cucumbers. We have been debating for weeks about what to do with these cutter ants, who already ate all the radishes in the garden tended by Alan and Indira, just next to the Guadalupe shrine. Lime, of course was rejected as an option. We talked about making daily offerings to the ants (they like grapefruit rind). We watered their home with a sprinkler for several hours in the hope that they would move, as ants do not like water. Juaquin finally decided to leave them alone, and to plant things next to their colony that they would like. Another dance with what is...
Hoy se trasplantaron pepinos a montículos en forma de volcanes con estiércol de caballo al centro. Se riega ligeramente la planta recién trasplantada, y de ahí en adelante sólo se irriga el centro del montículo. Una gran colonia de hormigas vive al lado de donde plantamos los pepinos. Hemos debatido por semanas qué hacer con estas hormigas arrieras, que ya se han comido todos los rábanos del jardín cuidado por Alan e Indira, a un costado del altar de Guadalupe. Se rechazó la idea de usar limón. Se habló de hacer ofrendas diarias a las hormigas (les gusta la cáscara de toronja). Irrigamos su territorio con un rehilete por varias horas con la esperanza de que se mudaran, ya que no les gusta el agua. Juaquín finalmente decidió dejarlas en paz y plantar cosas al lado de su colonia que sea de su gusto. Otra danza con lo que es...

We are transplanting, making more raised beds (come see what a real raised bed is!) and cleaning the freshly-cleared old compost area, where a new garden will soon be planted. On Thursday at noon, we'll be receiving another group of kids (8-12 year-old) from Escuela del Mundo. Come work with the kids for an hour or so. They are a lot of fun!
Even if you only have 1/2 hour to spare, we'll find something useful to do. We can use all the help we can get... And you may be lucky if it's a day when Andre' comes around, as he brings fine wine, and several wine glasses, to cheer up the already cheery transplanters...
Estamos trasplantando, preparando más camas elevadas (ven a ver una cama elevada de verdad!) y despejando la vieja área de composta, donde pronto se plantará un nuevo jardín. El jueves a mediodía recibiremos otro grupo de niños (8-12 años) de la Escuela del Mundo. Ven a trabajar con los niños por alrededor de una hora, son muy divertidos!
Incluso si sólo cuentas con media hora, encontraremos algo útil que hacer, toda la ayuda es bienvenida... Y puede que tengas suerte si es un día que nos visita André, ya que él trae buen vino y muchas copas para animar a un grupo (ya de por sí) animado de trasplantadores...
