Today was a long-anticipated day. Many of us have been curious about how we were going to transplant the seedlings that we started last week, into new planter boxes.
Yes, for lettuce, basil and other plants, we take the seedlings from the seeding boxes (averaging 500-1000 seeds per box), and transplant 100 seedlings or less into new boxes with a different soil composition. This seems time consuming but it is a very efficient way to get plants to grow in a perfectly controlled soil, use minimum water (because plants are so close in the boxes) and get the roots to grow deep and strong as the plants go for the manure at the bottom of the box.
The soil that we are mixing here is richer in sand. Proportions are 1/3 Tierra Lama (river silt), 1/3 compost, 1/3 river sand. The increase in sand volume allows for excellent drainage and easy growth for the roots.
Un día muy anticipado. Muchos de nosotros teníamos curiosidad en saber cómo íbamos a transplantar las plántulas comenzadas la semana pasada hacia sus nuevas cajas. Sí, para la lechuga, la albahaca y otras plantas, tomamos las plántulas de los almácigos (cada caja con 500-1000 individuos), y transplantamos alrededor de cien plántulas a nuevas cajas con una distinta composición de tierra. Esto parece requerir mucho tiempo y esfuerzo (otro paso antes de transplantar al suelo), pero es un método muy efectivo de cultivar las plantas en un medio perfectamente controlado, usar el mínimo de agua (ya que las plantas están muy cercas unas de otras) y dejar que las raíces crezcan profundas y fuertes al alcanzar el abono del fondo. Each box receives 1/2 " of sifted horse manure (clumps get the roots to attach themselves to the clump which makes it difficult to later transplant).

After preparing a working table with 2 levels for ergonmic ease, we begin with laying damp rags on the edge of the new boxes. Depending on how many boxes you will need to transplant a whole box, you need to create new labels. The information is the same but you now add the date of transplant. You can then track how successful your (lunar) timing was, an duplicate it next year if the crop was succulent, beautiful, abundant, etc.
A small clump of seedlings (20-30) gets picked up from the lower box and gently dropped on the rag to break the clump and make it easy to separate the roots.
Después de preparar un mesa de trabajo alta por consideraciones ergonómicas, empezamos a colocar trapos humedecidos (previamente remojados en agua) al borde de la caja nueva. Se preparan las etiquetas necesarias, cada caja debe tener la suya; la información es la misma pero también se añade la fecha de transplante (hoy). Se inserta la herramienta desde abajo, y se levanta con todo y tierra un pequeño manojo de plántulas (20-30) para luego dejarlas caer sobre el trapo para desmoronar el agregado y acceder fácilmente a las raíces con el fin de separarlas.
Seedlings are now separated and laying on damp rag. Notice in the image above how the roots are not that well developed, this is because we used seeding boxes that were not prepared as instructed, we had this from a few weeks before (Alan's starters). What's great is that we'll be able to compare.
You make a line of seedlings, then you gently fold over the rag (like tucking a child in bed), and start a new line.
Las plántulas están separadas y acostadas sobre el trapo mojado. Hay que notar en la imagen anterior como las raíces no están muy bien desarrolladas, esto se debe a que se usaron almácigos que no habían sido preparados como se instruyó, son otros que teníamos de antes (almácigos de Alan). Lo bueno es que tendremos un buen punto de comparación.
Se coloca una línea de plántulas, se dobla el trapo con cuidado (como arropando con una cobija a un niño en la cama), y se comienza otra línea.
Cuando se llena el trapo, se enrolla en un bultito con todo y su etiqueta. Puedes preparar varios rollos antes de empezar a transplantar.

OTHER DETAILS
- Seedlings in seed boxes should be left to dry in a shady spot. The soil with break more easily to separate the roots.
- Fold each edge of the rags so roots don't get caught in the frayed edges
- Each seedlings gets transplanted about 1 1/2" apart.
- When done, water in between the rows. You can also soak the box in a tub of water, let it float and pick up before it sinks.
- Leave box in shady spot until next day, so seedlings can recover from the transplant
OTROS DETALLES
- Los almácigos deben estar semi-secos (secar a la sombra ~un día antes); la tierra se desmoronará prontamente y facilitará la separación de raíces.
- Si tus trapos están hechos andrajos, dobla sus bordes para que las raíces no se atoren en lo deshilado.
- Cada plántula se coloca como a 1 1/2" entre sí, y a tresbolillo.
- Al terminar, riega entre las hileras. Tambien puedes colocar la caja en una tina de agua, dejar flotar y embeber agua y sacar antes de que se hunda.
- Dejar caja con transplantes en un sitio sombreado por uno o dos días, para que las plántulas no se estresen y se recuperen.
