El Jardín de Guadalupe

Catherina, a San Pancho resident and Juaquin's friend, generously donated a freshly painted Guadalupe for the shrine. As soon as we started working on our garden shrine, a name for our garden emerged: El Jardín de Guadalupe. She's now adorned with flowers and lights, just in time to greet the many circus children's show attendees...

Catherina, una residente de San Pancho y amiga de Juaquín, generosamente donó una escultura recién pintada de La Virgen de Guadalupe para el altar. Tan pronto como comenzamos a trabajar en el altar surgió un nombre para el huerto: "El Jardín de Guadalupe". Ahora está adornada con flores y luces, justo a tiempo para dar la bienvenida a todos los asistentes del show de circo de los niños...

Today was a "blackout" day in the biodynamic calendar, which means it is not a good day to plant. Because many plants will soon have to go into the soil, like squashes, melons, cantaloupes, zucchinis and cucumbers, we started preparing some areas for planting.

A small garden behind the Jaguar Alliance (and entreamigos) was initiated by Pat and Randy a few weeks ago . After Pat injured herself, Alan and Indira took it over. The patch already has tomatoes, squashes, basil, radishes and more. Today, we learned how to properly weed, cultivate and then water. This garden will receive our first transplants next week.

Hoy fue un día de "apagón" en el calendario biodinámico, lo que significa que no es un buen día para plantar. Ya que muchas plantas pronto estarán listas para el suelo, como los calabacines, melones y pepinos, comenzamos a preparas algunas áreas para su trasplante.

Un pequeño huerto detrás de Alianza Jaguar (y entreamigos) fue iniciado por Pat y Randy hace unas semanas. Después de que Pat se accidentó, Indira y Alan lo continuaron. La parcelita ya tiene algunos jitomates, calabacines, albahacas y rábanos entre otras cosas. Hoy, aprendimos cómo deshierbar, labrar y luego regar correctamente. Este huerto recibirá nuestros primeros transplantes esta semana.

The soil being dry, we first break the soil and lift a clump of dirt with a knife or trowel. We then pull the weeds which come out very easy with their roots. Use the tool firmly, but being careful around the plant's root area. You then proceed to cultivate some more with a (small) pitchfork, and then reshape the soil with a metal rake, like to form the mounds around the cuurbits (melons, squashes, cucumbers).

Con el suelo seco, se quiebra la tierra levantándola con un cuchillo o pala jardinera, luego se sacan las malezas, que salen con facilidad con todo y su raíz. Se usa la herramienta con firmeza, pero cuidando el área alrededor de la planta en desarrollo. Se intensifica el labrado con un bieldo pequeño, aflojando aun más la tierra. Se vuelve a dar forma al terreno con un rastrillo metálico, como por ejemplo para reconformar los montículos de las cucurbitáceas (melones, sandías y pepinos).

Using a small hose-end sprinkler, we water the small area we just weeded (100sq feet) and continue to the next area. Each section is worked with the three activities: weed-cultivate- water, before continuing with the next.

Usando un regador terminal de manguera, se riega el área recién intervenida. Se trabaja por secciones pequeñas (10 metros cuadrados), completando las tres actividades: deshierbar-labrar-regar, antes de continuar con la próxima sección.

Three new visitors came by yesterday, They have a small nursery about an hour North of San Pancho and want us to come visit. They specialize in exotic fruit trees and want to give us some trees for our fruit tree forest. We'll be visiting next weekend.

Tuvimos tres visitantes nuevos. Tienen un vivero pequeño como a una hora al norte de San Pancho y nos invitaron a visitarlos. Se especializan en árboles frutales exóticos y les gustaría darnos algunos árboles para el bosque de alimentos. Nos toca visitarlos el siguiente fin de semana.

This is a Lychee tree, in full bloom, just next to our plant nursery. Our friend Carmen, who knows that tree (as all the town's people know where all the Lychee trees are, many of them planted by Juaquin around the Civic Garden four years ago!), came by and told us to water the tree for the fruits to be abundant.

Este es un árbol de lichi en floración total, justo al lado de nuestro vivero. Nuestra amiga Carmen que conoce bien este árbol y que lo ha cuidado antes nos recomendó regarlo con frecuencia para que dé abundante fruta (la gente del pueblo sabe bien dónde están los árboles de lichi, muchos de ellos plantados por Juaquín hace cuatro años en el Jardín Cívico!)

Our first attempt to rottotill the two areas in front of Allianza Jaguar was aborted as the soil was too dry. Thanks to a shopping trip to Puerto Vallarta, and the many garden hoses and oscillators we purchased, we gave the ground a good soak today and will be ready to rototill next week.

Nuestro primer intento por usar el motocultor en las dos jardineras a la entrada de Alianza Jaguar fue abortado debido a que el suelo estaba demasiado seco. Gracias a un viaje de compras a Puerto Vallarta, en el cual conseguimos muchas mangueras y regadores, logramos empapar bien el suelo para que esté listo la próxima semana.
