A Visit to San Sebastian - Visita a San Sebastián

Chantal Galvan, from the Mariposa Medispa in Sayulita, invited us to go to San Sebastian today to visit Dct Sergio Villanueva Larios' newly built detox clinic. The clinic will be offering many natural and bioenergetic therapies such as colonics, massage, mud therapies and drug addiction treatments. Dct. Sergio wants to create a large vegetable garden at the clinic, as the treatments are always supported by a vegetarian diet.
Our interest in working in that area is that we can test many of the species that we have started in San Pancho and monitor how they each fare at higher altitude (San Sebastian's altitude is 4,500'). This is of particular importance as we have also initiated a relationship with a Huichol village in the mountains and have sent them 40 varieties of seeds.

Chantal Galvan, de Mariposa Medispa en Sayulita, nos invitó a San Sebastián del Oeste para visitar la nueva cínica del Dr. Sergio Villanueva Larios. La clínica ofrecerá muchos tipos de terapias alternativas, y desean contar con un huerto de verduras para sus dietas vegetarianas.
Nuestro interés en esa área es probar muchas de las especies y variedades que comenzamos en San Pancho y comparar su crecimiento en altitudes mayores (San Sebas está a 1,480 msnm). Esto es de particular importancia porque también iniciamos una relación con un pueblo Huichol en las montañas y les hemos enviado unas 40 variedades de semillas.

Dct Sergio's property needs some soil preparation as it is mostly clay and rocks. We will be going back next week with a crew to prepare the garden area with the addition of compost and cow manure. We will be bringing a variety of vegetables and flowers once the beds have been created.

La propiedad del Dr. Sergio necesita preparación de suelo ya que consiste mayormente en arcilla y piedras. Volveremos a ir la próxima semana con un equipo para preparar el área de huerto y adicionar composta y estiércol de vaca. Traeremos una variedad de verduras y flores una vez que se hayan creado las camas.

After our visit to the clinic, we headed to San Sebastian for lunch. In the beautiful courtyard of an old hotel, Juaquin spotted a magnificent and healthy strawberry guava tree. We got permission from the hotel owner to collected some of its seeds on the ground. The passion of an horticulturist is contagious...for the next 20 minutes, our entire party of six was on its knees looking for seeds!

Después de nuestra visita a la clínica, nos encaminamos a San Sebas para almorzar. En un patio hermoso de un hotel viejo, Juaquín encontró un sano y magnífico guayabo (fresa). Obtuvimos permiso de los dueños para colectar un poco de las semillas del piso. La pasión de un horticultor es contagiosa...durante los siguientes 20 minutos, los seis de nosotros estábamos arrodillados colectando semilla!

After a wonderful Italian lunch at Coco's Montebello restaurant, we visited an organic coffee plantation and took samples of tomato trees while admiring the beautiful orchids grafted on trees in the shaded coffee grove.

Después de un almuerzo italiano fabuloso en el restaurante Montebello, visitamos una finca cafetalera orgánica y tomamos muestra del árbol de tomate mientras admirábamos las hermosas orquídeas que crecían a la sombra de los cafetos.
