Working with a Master - Trabajando con un Maestro

I have had the good fortune to apprentice with many masters. My father was a master car mechanic and fixer of anything mechanical. He still is, at 83, the kind of man you want to bring on an expedition in the Sahara Desert (if you opt for the Land Rover instead of the Camel!). In my twenties I fished commercially with Tommy Nelson, a legendary salmon and herring fisherman from Alaska. The man was known as "Sockeye" from Ketchikan to Prudoe Bay, for his ability to catch more fish than anyone else. I worked as a corporate trainer under the influence of Jack Cirrie, a retired Marines Lieutenant Colonel-turned Zen master and educator. Working with a fearless warrior embracing his healing and vulnerability gave me a whole new perception of brotherhood. For eight years I studied with Lama Padma Gyatso, and Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche, ritual masters and teachers of vajrayana meditation. During these years, I witnessed the depth of compassion and boundless energy of these extraordinary beings.

Last year, after a year of being fascinated by making soil (composting) and growing food, I fell under the spell of yet another extraordinary being-Juaquin Hershman Lawrence, a Master Horticulturist.

Masters typically become masters from learning from one, and then going on with the knowledge, practicing and improving upon it for years. Juaquin was a student of Alan Chadwick, himself a student of Rudolf Steiner. Juaquin has been growing food gardens all over the world for the past 40 years! (by the way, his 70th birthday in on April 8th. Don't miss the party!).

Being around him is like being with a mad scientist, except that he is all about nature, beauty, poetry, divine chaos, fun and kindness. His love of the plant world is contagious. Taking a walk with him is like taking a walk with a child whose heart never ceases to marvel at the beauty in the world.

A rare fruit at a fruit stand will make him stop all traffic. A blooming tree calls him to collect her seeds. A flood is seen as a blessings for the the rich soil that it brings to our doorsteps. The moon dictates his activities as some days are for planting, others weeding or making soil, and others to attune to what Nature wants us to do.

His heart rejoices at the smallest of sprouts, and flowers are food for his eyes. His love of life and his willingness to live it fully is remarkable. His wildness and exuberance are also true traits of an elder.

I feel fortunate to work with Juaquin day in and day out, seven days a week, just for the love of learning from a Master, and doing what I view as the most important thing to learn, and teach children-the art of growing food as the foundation of sustainable culture.


Yesterday was a lovely day...


He tenido la buena fortuna de ser un aprendiz con muchos maestros. Mi padre era un maestro mecánico de carros y reparador de cualquier artefacto mecánico. Es aún, a sus 83 años, el tipo de acompañante que quieres llevar en una expedición por el Desierto del Sahara (¡si escoges el Land Rover en vez del camello!). En mis veintes pesqué comercialmente con Tommy Nelson, un legendario pescador de salmón y arenque de Alaska. Era conocido como "Sockeye" (salmón rojo) desde Ketchikan hasta la Bahía Prudoe, por su habilidad para pescar más que cualquiera. Trabajé como un entrenador corporativo bajo la influencia de Jack Cirrie, un Coronel-Teniente retirado de la Marina convertido en maestro Zen y educador. El trabajar con un guerrero intrépido que abraza su sanación y vulnerabilidad me dio una percepción totalmente nueva de la hermandad. Por ocho años estudié con Lama Padma Gyatso, y Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche, maestros del ritual de la meditación vajrayana. Durante estos años, fui testigo de la profundidad de la compasión y la energía ilimitada de estos seres extraordinarios.

El año pasado, después de un año de fascinación por el compostaje, la creación de tierra y el cultivo de alimentos, caí bajo el encanto de otro ser extraordinario -Juaquín Hershman Lawrence, un Maestro Horticultor.

Para convertirse en Mastros, típicamente aprenden directamente de uno, luego continuando con el conocimiento, y practicando y mejorando con los años. Juaquín fue un alumno de Alan Chadwick, alumno a su vez de Rudolf Steiner. ¡Juaquín ha cultivado jardines de alimento por todo el mundo por los últimos 40 años! (por cierto, su cumpleaños de 70 es el 8 de Abril. ¡No se pierdan la fiesta!).

Estar con él es como estar con un científico loco, con la excepción de que con él todo trata sobre la naturaleza, le belleza, el caos divino, la diversión y la gentileza. Su amor por el mundo de las plantas es contagioso. Salir a caminar con él es como salir a caminar con un niño cuyo corazón nunca cesa de maravillarse de la belleza del mundo.

Una fruta rara en un puesto de fruta lo hará detener todo el tráfico. Un árbol floreando lo llama para que colecte sus semillas. Una inundación es vista como una bendición por la rica tierra que lleva a nuestra puerta. La luna dicta sus actividades y unos días son para plantar, otros para deshierbar o preparar tierra, y otros para entonarse con la Naturaleza y lo que quiere que hagamos.

Su corazón se regocija con los brotes más pequeños y las flores son alimento para sus ojos. El amor por la vida y su voluntad para vivirla enteramente son notables. Su fiereza y exuberancia también son rasgos reales de un mayor.

Me siento muy afortunado de trabajar con Juaquín de la mañana a la noche, siete días a la semana, sólo por el amor de aprender con un Maestro, y lo que yo considero la cosa más importante de hacer y enseñar a los niños - el arte de cultivar alimentos como el cimiento de una cultura sustentable.
